Numbers Beat Adjectives

“Make it shorter” is a feeling, not an instruction. The model can’t know whether shorter means eight hundred words or eighty, so it lands on the average of everything it has ever seen called short. That average is the generic output you didn’t want, which is why adjectives are the weakest instruction you can give.

  • You can swap a vague adjective for a number the model can use.
  • You can spot a hedge like “maybe” that widens an answer back out.
  • You know an opener like “non-obvious” loosens an answer on purpose.
