Prompting with C-R-I-T

A one-line prompt gets a generic answer because it leaves the AI guessing at everything you didn't say. "CRIT" is the baseline we follow for our prompting scaffold. The acronym is a memory device for Context, Role, Interview, and Task, and you literally type each of the four sections, in that order.

  • You can write a prompt with Context, Role, Interview, and Task.
  • You can ask AI to question you one at a time before it answers.
  • You hand a weak prompt to AI and get a better one to paste in.
